Crochet Home Decor: 16 Free Patterns for Lampshades, Pillows & Poufs

Sixteen free patterns with real yarn amounts, a sizing method for any lampshade, and the bulb and fiber facts that keep crochet decor safe.

The short answer

The crochet home decor worth making is what you use daily: pillow covers, poufs, baskets, chair covers and lampshade covers. A 16-inch (40.5 cm) pillow is a safe first project; one published pattern lists 564 yards. For a lampshade, cover an existing shade, use an LED bulb, and measure before you buy yarn. Below: 16 free patterns and a sizing method for shades and chairs.

Crochet home decor works best when it fits what it covers: the shade, the insert, the chair seat. Here are 16 free crochet and knit patterns, plus how to size a lampshade cover and a chair cover yourself. If your project isn’t listed, the Yarn Calculator turns your size and gauge into skeins.

“Balls of” is yarn bought, not used. DROPS yards are our conversion from the DROPS yarn pages. * DROPS and Ravelry give no skill level; technique notes are ours. More ideas: our crochet egg rug pattern and craft room storage ideas.

Bar chart of published yardage: lampshade covers 306 to 569 yards, a 16-inch pillow 564 yards, poufs 308 and 485 yards; a 20 × 12 in pillow 680 yards and a basket 318 yards as full balls
Yarn listed in eight of the patterns above. Hatched bars are full balls bought, not yarn actually used.

Yardage does not scale neatly with size: the floor-lamp Throwing Shade has 2.75 times the surface of the table-lamp version (440 vs. 160 sq in) but needs only 1.67 times the yarn (569 vs. 341 yd). Scale from the closest size, and plan by yards: a yarn maker notes two worsted yarns can differ by up to 100 yards per 8 ounces.

Crochet lampshade ideas and how to size them

The safest route is a cover over an existing shade, which keeps yarn away from the bulb. Dense stitches and dark yarn let less light through; openwork pendant covers sit closer to the bulb, so the bulb rules below matter more.

Step 1: Measure your shade

Retailers describe a shade by top diameter, bottom diameter, slant and vertical height. Check the fitter too: spider fitters sit on a harp above the bulb, while clip-on fitters clip onto the bulb and are generally meant for low-wattage bulbs, the retailer notes. Skip crochet covers on clip-on shades.

Drum and tapered lampshade with the four measurements: A top diameter, B bottom diameter, C slant, D vertical height
Take all four measurements before you pick a pattern or buy yarn.

Buying a plain shade? The retailer’s rule: about one-third the height of the lamp body.

Step 2: Turn measurements into stitches and yards

The Coastline cover gives a sizing rule for straight, barrel-shaped shades. At 14 single crochet per 4 inches, multiply the circumference in inches by 3.5 and round up. Chain 10 fewer for the snug top band, work one round of sc, then increase 10 stitches evenly: the body has the full count and matches the shade.

Worked example for a 12-inch drum shade: 37.7-inch circumference, 122 starting chains, 132 stitches after the first increase round, about 464 yards, so 4 balls
Worked example for a 12 × 9 in drum shade in firm cotton, scaled from a published lampshade cover pattern.

Firm or stretchy yarn? The publishers handle ease differently. Coastline, in cotton, sizes the body to the shade. DROPS works its wool covers about 10% smaller around and 10% longer so they hug the shade. For the same 12 in shade in a stretchy wool, that is about 119 stitches (132 × 0.9) and about 10 in long (9 × 1.1). Pick the method that matches your yarn, not a mix.

How far to trust it. This is straight-line scaling, so 464 yd is an estimate: the reference also covers a fringe, and the Throwing Shade sizes show yarn doesn’t grow in step with area. The fourth ball is your margin.

Tapered shade? The Coastline rule is for straight shades. Use Lucida, which DROPS designed for tapered shades: it starts at the wide bottom and decreases toward the top. Our estimate for a 10 in top and 14 in bottom shade at 14 sc per 4 in and DROPS ease: 139 stitches at the bottom (44.0 in × 3.5 × 0.9), 99 at the top (31.4 in × 3.5 × 0.9), so 40 decreases spread over the height. For yarn, use the slant, not the height: about 9.22 in on a 9 in tall shade, so 348 sq in and about 476 yd, still 4 balls.

Step 3: Make it safe

Light output Incandescent LED
450 lumens 40 W 4.5–7 W
800 lumens 60 W 5.9–10.5 W
1,100 lumens 75 W 9.5–14 W
1,600 lumens 100 W 10.5–18 W

Source: U.S. Department of Energy, FEMP, Table 2.

Bar chart: for 800 lumens an incandescent bulb draws 60 watts and an LED 5.9 to 10.5 watts
Watts needed for the same light output, from the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Use LED bulbs only. Incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat, says the Department of Energy, while LEDs are cool to the touch. The Throwing Shade pattern says: LED bulbs only.
  • Yarn must never touch the bulb. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned that halogen torchiere floor lamps can start fires when fabric touches the bulb.
  • Respect the lamp’s maximum wattage. If the label is missing, consumer safety checklists say to use 60 watts or less.
  • Know your fiber. A regional extension fact sheet (revised 2003) says cotton burns with a hot flame but doesn’t melt, while acrylic drips excessively. Open fabrics such as lace burn more easily, and openwork crochet is open fabric. No yarn is fireproof.
  • Watch enclosed designs. Enclosed fixtures trap heat, says the Department of Energy; use an LED rated for them.

Knitted and crochet chair covers

A chair cover is the same fit problem as a lampshade. Measure five things: seat width at front and back, seat depth, backrest width and height, and the posts or wires where ties will go.

A real cover, not just a pad. The free Fitted Chair Covers pattern on Ravelry wraps an 18 × 18 × 2 in seat in granny and double crochet and holds it with about 2 yd of 1 in elastic per chair; it lists 400–500 yd. DROPS keeps a whole free category, Seat Pads & Chair Covers, if you want more styles.

Size it snug. DROPS works its Granny Pouf cover “a little less in width and a little longer” and makes its Merry Pillow cover 40 cm for a 45 cm insert, about 11% smaller. At the Chair Pads gauge of 16 stitches per 4 in, its 16 in front starts with 67 stitches: multiply your seat width by 4, then adjust to the stitch pattern.

Give it a base and ties. The Chair Pads pattern sews front, back and a side panel around 1¼ in foam, then adds two 16 in knitted ties at the back. Our take: on a wire chair, foam keeps the fabric from sagging between wires. A felted pad needs no ties, but shrinks: Pastel Meadow goes from about 52 × 52 cm to about 40 × 30 cm.

Yarn: about 600 yd per Chair Pad. Covering the backrest too? Scale by area and round up.

Chunky knit pouf

The Marshmallow Pouf is a simple chunky knit pouf pattern: garter stitch worked side to side with four strands of super bulky yarn on 15 mm needles, 5 stitches per 10 cm, shaped with short rows and filled with down duvets in a jersey sheet.

Yarn weights for home decor at a glance

Yarn weight (CYC) Sc per 4 in Hook Typical decor use

4 Medium (worsted) 11–14 5.5–6.5 mm Pillows, shade covers
5 Bulky (chunky) 8–11 6.5–9 mm Baskets, throws
6 Super bulky 7–9 9–15 mm Rugs, chunky throws
7 Jumbo 6 and fewer 15 mm and larger Poufs

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the swatch. At 14 vs. 19 stitches per 4 inches, two lampshade patterns differ by more than a third in stitch density.
  • Copying the wrong ease. Firm cotton covers are sized to the shade; stretchy wool covers about 10% under it.
  • Using a straight-shade rule on a tapered shade. Pick a pattern made for tapered shades.
  • Pairing acrylic with a hot bulb. The acrylic Throwing Shade is LED only.
  • Covering a clip-on shade. The fitter sits on the bulb.
  • Buying the exact yardage. Round up to whole balls from one dye lot.
  • Skipping the felted swatch. Pastel Meadow shrinks by about a quarter one way and 40% the other.

The bottom line

Good crochet home decor starts with a tape measure: pick a pattern close to your size, swatch, match the ease to your yarn, and round yardage up. For lampshades, use a real shade and an LED bulb, and keep yarn off the bulb.

How we research

We didn’t make these pieces ourselves. Every number comes from the pattern pages, yarn labels, the Craft Yarn Council, lamp retailers and U.S. safety sources listed below; our own math is labeled.

Before you start

Questions people ask

Is it safe to crochet a lampshade cover?

It can be, if the cover sits on an existing shade, never touches the bulb, and the lamp runs an LED bulb. One acrylic pattern here says LED bulbs only. Cotton does not melt, but it burns readily. No yarn is fireproof.

How much yarn do I need for a crochet pillow?

A published 16-inch crochet pillow with front and back lists 564 yards. Your stitch pattern and gauge change the total, so swatch first or scale from a pattern close to yours.

How do I make a crochet lampshade cover fit my shade?

For a straight drum or barrel shade in firm cotton at 14 sc per 4 inches, one pattern multiplies the circumference in inches by 3.5, rounds up and subtracts 10 for the starting chain, then adds the 10 stitches back after one round, so the body matches the shade. Stretchy wool covers are worked about 10% smaller and 10% longer. For a tapered shade, use a pattern made for one.

What are easy crochet home decor projects for beginners?

Square pillow covers and simple poufs. A published beginner pouf is a 20-inch cube of flat single-crochet panels at 4 stitches per 4 inches.
