Quilt Size Chart: Standard Quilt Sizes by Bed (in Inches)

Standard quilt sizes from crib to king, sizes by bed and drop, a custom size from your mattress, batting package sizes and fleece tie blanket yardage.

Your bed

Twin mattresses are sold 38 or 39 in wide; measure yours. Crib quilts have no drop.

How far it hangs down each side, measured from the top edge of the mattress.

20 in to go over and under standard pillows, 0 for none.

My mattress size

Filled in from the bed size. Change it to match your mattress.

Batting options

4 in is the minimum, like the backing. Ask your quilter.

How quilt size is calculated

Width is the mattress width plus the drop on both sides. Length is the mattress length plus the drop at the foot, plus the pillow tuck if you want the quilt to go over and under the pillows. Crib quilts are a fixed size with no drop. Measure your own mattress if you can: thickness and brands vary.

Batting package sizes

Batting should be bigger than the quilt top, like the backing. We look for the smallest package that covers the quilt plus the extra on every side, turning the package if needed, and tell you when the next size down only just misses.

Package sizes as listed by each maker.

Fat quarter and fat eighth sizes

A fat quarter is a quarter yard cut wide: half a yard long and half the fabric width. Sizes vary a little after the selvages come off. To count fat quarters for your pieces, use the fat quarter part of the quilt calculator.

Pre-cut sizes from the Fat Quarter Shop guide.

Fleece tie blanket sizes and yardage

A no-sew tie blanket uses two layers of fleece the same size. Cut a 4 in square from each corner and 4 in deep fringe on all four sides, then knot the top and bottom strips together. The knots take up the fringe, so the finished blanket is about 8 in smaller than the fabric in each direction. Fleece is sold 58 to 60 in wide, so every blanket here comes out about 48 to 50 in wide, depending on how much selvage you trim.

Buy the same amount of each of the two fleeces. Sizes are approximate; fleece stretches. Planned with 58 in usable width.

The blanket names are our labels for common sizes, not an industry standard. A blanket wider than about 50 in needs extra-wide fleece or a seam.

Questions and answers

What size is a queen quilt?

About 84 × 92 in (Fat Quarter Shop and APQS with a 12 in drop) to 90 × 95 in (Missouri Star). It covers a 60 × 80 in mattress with a 12 in drop on three sides.

What size is a king quilt?

Between 100 × 92 in (APQS, 12 in drop), 108 × 95 in (Missouri Star) and 98 × 106 in (Fat Quarter Shop), for a 76 × 80 in mattress.

What size is a throw quilt?

About 48 × 66 in (Fat Quarter Shop) or 50 × 65 in (Missouri Star). A throw is not made for a bed, so there is no drop.

Why do quilt size charts disagree?

Each chart assumes a different drop (how far the quilt hangs down) and some add a pillow tuck. Measure your mattress, choose your drop and use the calculator above.

What size is a crib quilt, and can a baby sleep under it?

Crib quilts are about 36 × 36 in to 36 × 52 in. Safe to Sleep (NIH, based on AAP guidance) says to keep quilts and blankets out of a baby's sleep area; use a crib quilt as a play mat or wall hanging until your child is at least 1.

What batting size do I need for a queen quilt?

For 84 × 92 in with 4 in extra per side you need at least 92 × 100 in, so Warm & Natural King (120 × 124 in). Some queen packages are only 90 in wide.

How much fleece do I need for a tie blanket?

For a blanket about 50 × 60 in, 2 yd of each of two fleeces (both layers), assuming 4 in fringe and 58 in usable width.
