Quilt Calculator: Backing, Binding and Batting Shopping List

Plan backing, binding, batting and fat quarters for any quilt size, with a shopping list you can copy, print or share.

Your quilt

Quilt size

Twin mattresses are sold 38 or 39 in wide; measure yours. Crib quilts have no drop.

How far the quilt hangs down each side. 12 in covers most mattresses.

20 in to go over and under standard pillows, 0 for none.

Finished size, side to side.

Finished size, top to bottom.

Fat quarters for pieces

Same-size pieces cut from fat quarters (18 × 21 in).

Finished size of one piece.

0 skips this part.

1/4 in is standard for piecing.

More options

About 40 in after trimming selvages and prewashing. Measure yours; enter 42 if your fabric is 42 in after trimming.

2 1/2 in is the most common double-fold binding.

4 in is the minimum; many longarm quilters want more. Ask your quilter.

4 in is the minimum, like the backing. Ask your quilter.

A 108 in wide back is about 106 in usable after trimming.

10 in (APQS) to 20 in (Missouri Star) for joining the ends and turning the corners.

1/2 in is common for backing seams.

Optional. Cotton can shrink 3 to 5 % when prewashed.

How this is calculated

The quilt size comes from the mattress plus the drop on both sides and at the foot, plus an optional pillow tuck (crib quilts are a fixed size). Backing and batting get extra on every side so the quilt can be loaded and squared up: 4 in is the minimum, so ask your longarm quilter. Backing is sewn from 42 in panels or cut from one wide back; binding is strips cut across the fabric and joined end to end. Every fabric amount is rounded up to the next 1/8 yd (or 0.1 m). Batting is matched to the smallest package that fits.

Steps for your numbers

  1. Backing size = quilt + 2 × 4 in overhang = 92 in × 100 in
  2. Horizontal seams: 3 panels × 92 in = 276 in → 7 3/4 yd
  3. Vertical seams: 3 panels × 100 in = 300 in → 8 3/8 yd
  4. 106 in wide back: 1 panel × 92 in = 92 in → 2 5/8 yd
  5. Perimeter = 2 × (84 in + 92 in) = 352 in
  6. Binding length = 352 in + 10 in extra = 362 in
  7. Each 45° join uses 2 1/2 in, so 10 strips × 40 in − 9 × 2 1/2 in = 377 1/2 in
  8. Fabric = 10 × 2 1/2 in = 25 in → 3/4 yd

This plan covers backing, binding, batting and same-size pieces. Fabric for the quilt top depends on your pattern, and batting prices are not included.

Questions and answers

What does this quilt calculator plan?

Backing, binding, batting and same-size pieces from fat quarters, with a shopping list you can copy, print or share as a link. It does not plan the fabric for the quilt top, because that depends on your pattern.

How much fabric do I need for a queen quilt?

For an 84 × 92 in queen quilt: backing 7 3/4 yd of 40 in fabric, binding 3/4 yd (10 strips) and Warm & Natural King batting. The top depends on your pattern.

How many fat quarters do I need?

It depends on the piece size. For example, 80 squares finishing at 5 in are cut at 5 1/2 in: 9 fit in one fat quarter (18 × 21 in), so you need 9 fat quarters.

Is my fabric enough?

Open "Is my fabric enough?" and enter what you already have. The calculator compares it with the backing and binding and tells you how much more to buy or what is left over.

Can I save my plan?
